Metal-Makers’ Forum: Cutting Edge

On November 09 to 13 the 15th International Industrial Exhibition ″Metal-Expo 2009″ was held in Moscow. This year 500 companies from 25 countries of the globe were represented there. 2.7 thousand company representatives were involved in the event and 18.5 thousand experts in industry attended the exhibition stands. Our representative in Russia that is Russian Trading House Dneprospetsstal-M took part in the Metal-Expo2009 as well.

Those days managers and experts of many companies had busy schedule. In the current uneasy economic environment the special emphasis is laid on the meeting of minds with customers, distributors as well as suppliers of equipment and raw materials. Along with meetings and negotiations, a number of conferences and panel discussions had taken place during the exhibition where the immediate problems of metallurgical and metal consumptive branches were discussed.

As the Ministry of Industry and Trade informs, in RF itself the metallurgical capacity utilization reaches 93% of pre-crisis level. Meanwhile, at the year-end the domestic market demand for metal products will reduce by 35-40% comparing the year 2008.The most dramatic recession will show the Russian car industry – by 50%, for machine building it is by 40%, civil engineering – by 35% and for fuel and energy complex – by 20%. Low consumption level has already affected the business of enterprises. For 9 months the revenue of metals companies has dropped by 50%.

Consumption volume reduction is not the short-term condition. According to Dmitry Goroshkov, vice-president of the Russian Steel consortium, lingering recovery of the market is expected: several favorable months will be followed by the depression periods. The stockout occurring and demand rising in several regions of Russia will initiate market fluctuations. However, the reactivation of capacities will result in further offer surplus. Import waves will also aggravate the situation in the Russian market.
